Water Before Food

Cockroaches need warmth, moisture and food. Of the three, moisture matters most — a cockroach survives a surprisingly long time without food and a much shorter time without water.

That single fact reorders what most people do. Householders start with the food; starting with the water is more effective.

• Fix any dripping tap, and check the trap under the sink for a slow leak
• Check behind the washing machine and dishwasher for damp — a weeping connection is a classic sustained source
• Dry the sink and draining board at night rather than leaving them wet
• Empty and dry pet water bowls overnight where you reasonably can
• Check for condensation around cold pipework and behind units
• Ventilate — a persistently humid kitchen is a hospitable one

If there is an actual leak, that needs a plumber. No treatment holds against a permanent water source.

Then the Food

• Dry goods into sealed hard containers
• Clean behind and beneath the cooker, fridge and washing machine — where the food actually is
• Clear the toaster tray and the gaps beside appliances
• Empty the bin nightly, lid on
• No pet food down overnight
• Wipe grease from around the hob and extractor — a food source in its own right

• They harbour inside appliance housings, unit voids and wall cavities you cannot access
• Egg cases are protected, so anything not accounting for the full life cycle leaves the problem running
• The population is almost always larger than what is visible
• In flats the source may be outside your property entirely
