Signs of Rats in a Harrow Property – What Should You Look For?

Most people find evidence long before they see a rat. Knowing what each sign means — and how fresh it is — tells you how serious the problem is.

What Are the Signs of Rats?

Droppings, gnawing damage, smear marks, runs, noises and burrows. Droppings are the most reliable single indicator: dark, tapered, and about the size of a large grain of rice or bigger.

The most useful question is not whether you have signs but whether they are fresh — and there is a straightforward way to find out, set out below.

The Six Signs

1. Droppings

The most reliable evidence. Rat droppings are dark brown to black, roughly 15mm long, tapered at one or both ends, and usually found in concentrated groups along a route or in a corner.

The freshness test matters more than the presence. Fresh droppings are dark, slightly moist and shiny. Older ones dry out, go grey and crumble when pressed with a stick. Sweep an area clean, note the date, and check again in three days — new droppings mean current activity, and none means it may have moved on.

2. Gnawing damage

Rats gnaw continuously because their incisors never stop growing. Look for damage to woodwork, plastic pipework, cable insulation, food packaging and stored goods. Fresh gnawing shows pale, clean wood; older damage darkens.

3. Smear marks

Dark greasy streaks along the base of walls, on beams, around pipe entries and at the edges of runs. Rats have poor eyesight and follow familiar routes by touch, brushing the same surfaces repeatedly. Smears indicate an established, regularly used route rather than a passing visit.

4. Runs

Trodden pathways through grass, undergrowth or dust, usually following a wall, fence line or other edge. In a loft, look for tracks through dust or flattened insulation.

5. Noises

Scratching, scurrying and dragging sounds, mostly after dark. Rats range through a building more than squirrels — walls, floors and ceilings as well as the loft.

6. Burrows

Outdoors: fist-sized holes in soil, under decking, beside sheds or against foundations. An active burrow has a smooth, worn entrance and no cobwebs across it.

The prices are identical, but the approach differs and misidentification wastes a visit. If in doubt, photograph the droppings next to something for scale and send it with your enquiry.

Where to Look

How Serious Is It?

What you have foundWhat it suggests
A few old dry droppings in a shedPast or occasional activity
Fresh droppings returning after cleaningCurrent, active problem
Smear marks along a wallEstablished route, ongoing
Gnawed cablingAct promptly — fire risk
A sighting indoorsEstablished activity, usually more than one
A daytime sightingOften a larger population competing for space
Burrows against the house wallWorth investigating properly
One rat crossing the gardenOrdinary — not evidence of a house problem

That last row is worth dwelling on. Rats live outdoors across the whole of London and a single garden sighting is not a house problem.

Health and Handling

Rat droppings and urine can carry organisms that cause illness in people. That is a reason for sensible care rather than alarm:

Related Questions

How many rats does one sighting mean?

Impossible to say precisely, but rats are not conspicuous, so a sighting indoors generally means established activity rather than a lone visitor.

Should I wait and see?

Waiting rarely improves a rodent problem, and gnawed cabling is the reason not to.

Can I photograph the evidence for you?

Please do. A photograph of droppings next to a coin for scale settles the rat-or-mouse question immediately.

Frequently Asked

Signs of Rats Harrow FAQs

What are the main signs of rats?

Droppings, gnawing damage, dark smear marks, trodden runs, night-time noises and outdoor burrows.

What do rat droppings look like?

Dark brown to black, roughly 15mm long, tapered at the ends, usually in concentrated groups.

How do I know if the droppings are fresh?

Fresh ones are dark, moist and shiny; old ones are grey, dry and crumble. Sweep an area clean and check again after three days.

How do I tell rat droppings from mouse droppings?

Rat droppings are much larger — around 15mm and tapered — while mouse droppings are small dark specks 3 to 6mm long.

What are smear marks?

Dark greasy streaks where rats repeatedly brush against surfaces. They indicate an established, regularly used route.

Is a daytime sighting worse?

Often, yes. It can suggest a larger population competing for space and food.

Is it safe to clean up droppings?

With care. Dampen with disinfectant first rather than dry-brushing or vacuuming, wear gloves, and wash your hands afterwards.

Does a rat in the garden mean they are in the house?

No. Rats live outdoors throughout London — indoor evidence is what indicates a house problem.
