• Ants in stored food, repeatedly is worth treating
• A nest inside the structure is worth treating

The Boundary Question

In a terrace or a pair of semis the nest is frequently not on your side of the fence — and unlike rats, that is often less of a problem than it sounds.

• A nest under a shared patio or path serves both properties
• Along a party wall foundation is a common location
• Under a boundary wall or step
• Baiting works through the colony, so treatment at your entry points still reaches the nest
• Which means you do not necessarily need access next door to resolve it
• Sealing your entry point reduces indoor activity regardless

This is the useful difference between ants and rodents. Ant bait is carried home and shared, so treating where the foragers are can deal with a colony you cannot reach.

When Treatment Is Worth It

• A persistent trail indoors that returns after cleaning
• Ants getting into stored food repeatedly
• A nest that appears to be inside the structure — under a floor, in a cavity, behind a unit
• Ants coming through a consistent single point in a wall or floor

• You run a food business or are letting the property

Why a House Costs More Than a Flat

• A garden, which is where the nest usually is
• More external wall and more entry points to trace
• A patio, path or decking with nests beneath
• A subfloor void
• More rooms to follow a trail through

The £30 difference reflects the garden more than the house. In a house the job is usually finding and treating a nest outside rather than spraying a worktop.

How Ant Treatment Works

• Bait is carried back to the nest by the foragers
• Shared through the colony, including to the queen
• That is what ends it — killing foragers achieves nothing, they are replaced
• You may see more ants for a day or two as they recruit to the bait
• That is the treatment working, not failing
• Do not clean the trail up during that period

Pharaoh Ants Are Different

Small, yellowish-brown, indoors year-round, and unrelated to the garden ants that turn up in July.

• They nest inside the structure, in warm voids
• They are active all year, not seasonally
• Spraying them splits the colony and makes it dramatically worse
• They spread between flats in a block, which matters in a conversion
• They need a specific baiting approach
• A genuine concern in food premises

If you have small pale ants indoors in winter, tell us. Do not spray them.
