Step 1: Check the Loft

First, because in a house it is the step that decides whether the treatment lasts.

• Look for old birds' nests in the eaves and at the gable ends
• Check any disused chimney breast
• Look for a dead bird or rodent
• Look for old wasp nests — a food source once empty
• Check outside for pigeon roosting on a roof, parapet or flat-roof extension

Step 4: Vacuum Properly

• Crevice tool along every skirting, slowly
• Under furniture rather than around it
• Both sides of every rug, and the floor beneath
• Inside wardrobe bases and along seams
• The sides of stair treads
• Repeat every few days for several weeks
• Empty into a sealed bag and put it outside

Step 5: Deal With the Textiles

• Hot wash anything washable
• Freeze smaller items that cannot be washed — sealed bag, domestic freezer, a couple of weeks
• Dry clean valuable items that take neither
• Store clean and sealed rather than in an open wardrobe

Afterwards

• Keep vacuuming edges and under furniture
• Move furniture periodically instead of leaving it static
• Store wool clean and sealed
• Watch windowsills in spring — adults reappearing is your early warning
• If a nest was removed, make sure the access point was closed by a roofer
