Step 1: Cut the Food Supply

The step people skip, and the one that works. Spiders live where there are insects.

• External lighting. A porch or security light near a door draws insects all night and spiders follow. Move it, dim it, put it on a sensor, or switch to a warmer bulb
• Move the bins away from the back door
• Compost — keep it away from the house wall
• Standing water — a blocked gully, a water butt overflow, a saucer under a pot
• Damp in a garage, cellar or subfloor supporting silverfish and other insects
• Fly screens on windows you keep open in summer
• Cut back planting touching the house wall

Step 2: Close the Gaps

• Fill gaps around pipe and cable entries
• Seal gaps in and around window and door frames

• Ultrasonic repellers. No credible evidence against spiders or anything else
• Peppermint or citrus sprays. Brief at best; the smell fades long before the spider does
• Vacuuming spiders only. Fine as a response, does nothing about why they are there
• Supermarket sprays alone, with the insect source untouched

September and October: male house spiders leave their webs and wander looking for females. Bigger, faster, and in rooms where you never see them otherwise.

• It is annual and it passes within weeks
• Most of them were already in or around the building
• A glass and a piece of card is the standard removal method
• Baths and sinks catch them because they cannot climb the glaze, not because of the drains
• It is not a sign anything is wrong
