A staircase has a peculiar property: it is one of the busiest parts of a house and simultaneously contains some of its most undisturbed carpet.
People walk up the middle. The outer few inches of each tread, and the angle at the back where the tread meets the riser, are never trodden on. Vacuuming a staircase properly is awkward, so most people do the flat part and miss the angle. Nothing is ever moved, because it is a staircase.
The result is a strip of wool carpet, kept warm by the house, that is essentially undisturbed for years at a time.
