How Do You Get Rid of Carpet Beetles From a Harrow Weald Home?

Step 1: Look Up Before You Look Down

This is the step that distinguishes a carpet beetle job from a carpet moth job, and skipping it is why people treat twice.

Carpet beetles evolved feeding on keratin in nests — feathers, dried remains, shed skin. A house with an old bird's nest in the eaves, a disused chimney with a nest in it, or a dead bird or rodent in a roof void has a self-sustaining beetle nursery, producing adults that fly down into the bedrooms below.

• Check the loft, particularly around the eaves and where soffits meet the roofline
• Check disused chimneys and capped flues
• Look for feathers, twigs or dried droppings in roof voids
• Note where the beetles concentrate. Upstairs-only usually means a source above
• Check any wasp nest left in situ from a previous year — these also support beetles

Step 2: Find the Larvae Indoors

Larvae avoid light, so look where nobody looks:

• Under furniture that has not moved in a year — sofas, wardrobes, beds
• Along carpet edges and beneath the gripper at skirtings
• Under rugs, and inside rolled or stored ones
• In wardrobes, on wool items stored unworn
• In airing cupboards on blankets and woollens
• Under floorboards where fluff and hair accumulate
• In the corners behind permanently open doors

You are looking for brown bristly larvae, shed skins that look like more larvae, and irregular holes or thinning in natural fibres.

Step 3: Vacuum Properly, and Keep Doing It

• Crevice tool along every skirting, slowly
• Under furniture rather than around it — move it
• Both sides of every rug, and the floor beneath
• Inside wardrobe bases and along wardrobe seams
• Repeat every few days for several weeks
• Empty into a sealed bag and put it outside, or the larvae carry on in the machine

Step 4: Deal With Stored Wool

• Hot wash anything washable — heat kills all stages
• Freeze smaller items that cannot be washed: sealed bag, domestic freezer, a couple of weeks
• Dry clean valuable items that take neither
• Store clean — soiled wool is far more attractive than clean wool
• Use sealed containers rather than open wardrobes for long-term storage

What Does Not Work

• Killing the adults on the windowsill. They are not doing the damage, and they are on their way out rather than in.
• Mothballs and cedar. Traditional, and unreliable against an established infestation.
• Supermarket sprays alone. They treat the surface; larvae are at the pile base, under the gripper and in the underlay.
• Shampooing the carpet. Cleans it, does not remove larvae, and adds moisture.
• Treating rooms while ignoring a loft source. The most expensive mistake available here.
• Pheromone traps. Less useful than for moths — helpful monitoring at best, not control.

Step 5: Professional Treatment

Treatment reaches the base of the pile, carpet edges and under-furniture areas where larvae actually are, and stays active as further eggs hatch. Tell us if you have found or suspect a roof-space source, because that changes what needs doing alongside.

Afterwards

• Keep vacuuming edges and under furniture — it is the maintenance that prevents recurrence
• Move furniture periodically instead of leaving it static for years
• Store wool clean and sealed
• Keep an eye on windowsills in spring — adults reappearing is your early warning
• If a nest was removed, make sure the access point was closed, or a new nest follows

The Itchy Rash Question

Some people react to carpet beetle larval hairs with an itchy rash that looks like bites. Carpet beetles do not bite. If someone in the household has an unexplained rash and you have found bristly larvae, mention it — and see a doctor about the rash while we deal with the cause.
