• Someone moved to the spare room to escape the bites, and took them along
• A child moved into a sibling's room or a parent's bed
• The mattress or bedding was carried through the house to be washed or discarded
• A sofa was slept on — the living room then becomes the second room
• Both bedrooms were affected from the start, which happens when the source arrived on shared luggage

The first four are avoidable, and this is why every bed bug page we write says the same thing: do not move rooms. Being bitten in one room is better than being bitten in two.

When Two Rooms Is Genuinely Needed

• Live bugs or fresh evidence found in both rooms
• Someone has slept in the second room since the bites started
• Bedding, a mattress or upholstered furniture has moved between them
• Bites are being reported by people sleeping in both
• The rooms share a wall with services or a shared cavity route
• A sofa in the second room has been used for sleeping

When one room is enough

• Bites confined to one sleeper in one bed
• Nothing has been moved out of that room
• Adjacent rooms inspect clear on the visit
• Caught early, within a few weeks

We inspect adjacent rooms as part of the visit either way. If the second room is clear we will tell you and charge for one.

Preparing Two Rooms

• Both rooms prepared to the same standard — half-preparing one undoes the other
• Strip and hot-wash all bedding from both, then bag it sealed
• Clear floors and under beds in both
• Do not move anything between the rooms, including laundry baskets
• Empty bedside furniture in both
• Vacuum both thoroughly, then empty into a sealed bag outside
• Pull beds away from walls in both

Where to Sleep During Treatment

A question with a counter-intuitive answer.

• Keep sleeping in the treated room unless we tell you otherwise. You are the reason the bugs come out of harbourage and into the treatment
• Do not move to an untreated room in the house. That is how the third room happens
• Do not sleep on the sofa
• If you must be out of the room for a night after treatment, we will tell you and for how long
• Do not stay with family and take a bag of bedding with you

Children's Rooms

• Tell us there is a child's room involved — it affects product choice and re-entry timing
• Soft toys: hot wash, or seal in a bag and freeze for a couple of weeks
• A cot or a child's bed frame is treated with the same care as any other, and we will talk you through re-entry
• Bunk beds have more seams and joints than any other furniture we deal with
• Under-bed storage drawers need emptying — they are a classic harbourage
