The Arithmetic

When Four Rooms Is Right

• Larvae or shed skins found in more than two rooms
• A confirmed loft source — nest, feathers or a carcass
• Adults at several upstairs windows
• Wool carpet through the bedrooms and landing
• Damage found under furniture in multiple rooms
• A long-standing problem that has been treated piecemeal before

When It Is Not

• Damage in one room only, with nothing found elsewhere
• A handful of adults at a window in spring, with no larvae and no damage
• Historic damage under a wardrobe with no live larvae
• Synthetic carpet throughout, with the source elsewhere
• We will tell you if two rooms will do, and often it will

The Source Comes First

• Treating four rooms with the source still in place buys you a year
• Remove an old bird's nest from the eaves, soffit or roof void
• Have a disused chimney checked and swept — old jackdaw nests are common here
• Remove any carcass from a void or under a floor
• Clear old stored textiles from the loft, or seal them properly
• Proof the bird access that let it in
• Then treat

On a listed building or in the conservation area, external proofing work may need consent. It is worth checking before anyone fixes mesh to a soffit or a chimney pot.

How Rooms Are Counted

• Stairs and landing together are one room
• A through lounge-diner is one
• A large bedroom is one
• An airing cupboard or box room counts if textiles are stored in it
• A loft is assessed separately — it is a source, not a fifth room
• More than four rooms is possible; ask and we will price it

Preparation for Four Rooms

• Move furniture out from walls where you can — wardrobes and beds especially
• Lift every rug and leave them accessible
• Vacuum all four rooms, perimeters and under furniture
• Empty the vacuum outside into a sealed bag each time
• Empty any cupboard where woollens are stored
• Wash at 60°C or freeze affected textiles
• Provide loft access if there is any
• Plan to be out for a few hours while floors dry

What Happens on the Visit

• Inspection of all four rooms plus the loft and any accessible void
• Identification — beetle or moth, which changes the approach
• Residual treatment to carpet, edges, board gaps and beneath furniture
• Treatment of rugs in treated rooms, both faces where appropriate
• A clear statement of what the source is and what needs removing
• Follow-up visit within the price

Afterwards

• Stay off treated floors until dry
• Do not shampoo or steam-clean for two weeks
• Vacuum weekly, perimeters and under furniture
• Expect a few adults for two or three weeks
• Deal with the loft or chimney source if it has not been dealt with
• Move heavy furniture occasionally — the best long-term prevention

Related Questions

Can you remove the bird's nest?

An accessible disused nest, usually yes. Active nests of wild birds are protected during the breeding season and must be left.

Do I need the chimney swept?

If there is an old nest in it, yes, and a sweep is the right trade for that.

Is four rooms cheaper per room?

Yes — £90 a room against £180 for a single room.
