How the Second Bedroom Got Involved

• Someone moved to the spare room to escape the bites, and took them along
• A child moved into a sibling's room or a parent's bed
• The mattress or bedding was carried through the house
• A sofa was slept on — the living room then becomes the second room
• Both bedrooms were affected from the start, which happens when the source arrived on shared luggage
• Or an infested piece of furniture was moved between rooms

Most of those are avoidable, and this is why every bed bug page we write says the same thing: do not move rooms. Being bitten in one room is better than being bitten in two.

In a Period House, One More Route

Worth knowing, though it is much less common than someone moving.

• Gaps behind original skirtings can run further than expected
• Floorboard gaps allow movement between a room and the void below
• A shared chimney breast connects rooms on different floors
• Lath and plaster with old cracks gives harbourage inside a wall
• Which means a long-standing infestation can spread without anyone carrying it
• But if it has only been weeks, someone moved. That is still the likeliest answer

When Two Rooms Is Genuinely Needed

• Live bugs or fresh evidence found in both
• Someone has slept in the second room since the bites started
• Bedding, a mattress or upholstered furniture has moved between them
• Bites reported by people sleeping in both
• A piece of furniture has been moved between them
• A sofa in the second room has been used for sleeping

When one room is enough

• Bites confined to one sleeper in one bed
• Nothing has been moved out of that room
• Adjacent rooms inspect clear on the visit
• Caught early, within a few weeks

We inspect adjacent rooms as part of the visit either way. If the second room is clear we will tell you and charge for one.

Preparing Two Rooms

• Both rooms prepared to the same standard — half-preparing one undoes the other
• Strip and hot-wash all bedding from both, then bag it sealed
• Clear floors and under beds in both
• Do not move anything between the rooms, including laundry baskets
• Empty bedside furniture and under-bed storage in both
• Vacuum both thoroughly, then empty into a sealed bag outside
• Pull beds away from walls in both

Where to Sleep During Treatment

• Keep sleeping in the treated rooms unless we tell you otherwise. You are what draws the bugs out of harbourage into the treatment
• Do not move to a third room
• Do not sleep on the sofa
• Do not stay with family and take a bag of bedding with you
• If you must be out of a room after treatment, we will tell you and for how long

After Treatment

• Complete the follow-up visits — eggs hatch after the first treatment
• Bites can continue briefly; that is expected, not failure
• Keep beds away from walls for a while
• Consider mattress encasements, which make future inspection much easier
• Check any second-hand furniture before it comes in
