The Short Answer
Check the loft, deal with stored wool, vacuum thoroughly, and treat the affected rooms. Ignore the adults on the windowsill — they are leaving, not arriving.
Treatment is £180 first room, £60 per additional room, up to £420 for five.

Getting Rid of Carpet Beetles – Quick Answer
Step 1: Check the Loft
First, because in a house it is the step that decides whether the treatment lasts.
- Look for old birds' nests in the eaves and at the gable ends
- Check any disused chimney breast
- Look for a dead bird, squirrel or rodent
- Look for old wasp nests — a food source once empty
- Check the insulation for larvae and shed skins
- Check stored wool — blankets, rugs, old clothing and rolled carpet
- Check outside for nesting activity in the eaves, especially with mature trees nearby
- Take a torch and stay on the joists. Do not step between them
- Wear gloves and a mask if handling an old nest
- Some wild birds and their active nests are legally protected — check before removing anything in the breeding season
- All UK bats and their roosts are protected. Droppings that crumble to a glittery powder mean bats — stop and take specialist advice
In a house with trees around it, the beetles in your bedroom and the bird's nest in your eaves are usually the same problem. Only one of them is worth treating.
Step 2: Check the Stored Wool
- Empty every wardrobe of wool, cashmere and silk and inspect each item
- Look for several small separate holes — the typical beetle pattern on clothing
- Check wardrobe bases, seams and corners for larvae and shed skins
- Check a dressing room or walk-in wardrobe
- Check suitcases, under-bed boxes and the airing cupboard
- Check the loft again for stored textiles
- Items stored unworn since last winter are the classic
- Soiled wool is considerably more attractive than clean
Step 3: Find the Larvae in the Carpet
- Under furniture that has not moved in a year
- Along carpet edges and beneath the gripper at skirtings
- Under rugs, and inside rolled or stored ones
- In the corner behind a permanently open door
- Under beds and behind under-bed storage
- At the sides of stair treads
- Under a piano, dresser or bookcase
You are looking for brown bristly larvae, shed skins that look like more larvae, and irregular holes or thinning.

Step 4: Vacuum Properly
- Crevice tool along every skirting, slowly
- Under furniture rather than around it
- Both sides of every rug, and the floor beneath
- Inside wardrobe bases and along seams
- The sides of stair treads
- Repeat every few days for several weeks
- Empty into a sealed bag and put it outside
Step 5: Deal With the Textiles
- Hot wash anything washable
- Freeze smaller items that cannot be washed — sealed bag, domestic freezer, a couple of weeks
- Dry clean valuable items that take neither
- Store clean and sealed rather than in an open wardrobe
- Anything genuinely valuable — tell us, and consider a specialist
Step 6: Treatment
Treatment reaches the base of the pile, carpet edges and under-furniture areas where larvae actually are, and stays active as further eggs hatch. Tell us what you found in the loft.
Then the Roof, If There Was a Nest
- Removing the nest is only half of it — the access point lets the next bird in
- Meshing eaves and closing gaps is a roofer's job
- Do it outside the breeding season
- Cut back branches touching the roof where mature trees give access
- Otherwise it recurs, and so does the beetle problem
- We will describe what needs doing in writing
What Does Not Work
- Killing the adults on the windowsill. They do not damage anything and are on their way out
- Mothballs and cedar. Unreliable against an established infestation
- Supermarket sprays alone. Surface treatment; larvae are at the pile base and in the wardrobe
- Shampooing the carpet. Cleans it, does not remove larvae
- Treating rooms while ignoring the loft. The expensive mistake here
- Pheromone traps. Less useful than for moths — monitoring at best
Afterwards
- Keep vacuuming edges and under furniture
- Move furniture periodically instead of leaving it static
- Store wool clean and sealed
- Watch windowsills in spring — adults reappearing is your early warning
- Check the eaves each year for new nesting activity
- Keep branches cut back from the roof
Related Questions
Do they bite?
No. Some people react to the larval hairs with an itchy rash, which is different.
Will they eat synthetic carpet?
No. They need keratin from natural animal fibres, though they will feed on hair in the pile.
How long does treatment take to work?
Activity reduces within a couple of weeks; treatment stays active as further eggs hatch.
